Notice of Race

2011 Tybee 500

Annual 500 mile catamaran race

The Tybee 500, May 16-21, 2011, is a 500-mile Race from Islamorada, Florida, to Tybee Island, Georgia. The Organizing Authority is the Tybee Island Sailing Association, Inc.


  1. The race will be governed by the current Racing Rules of Sailing and applicable class rules, except as modified by this NOR or the Tybee 500 Sailing Instructions

  2. Classes will consist of production Formula 18s, and Nacra 20s Additional classes will be considered, and will consist of 5 or more boats, with a limit of 30 total entries for the race.

  3. The warning signal for the first race shall be at 9:55am, May 16, 2011, in the ocean, off the Islander Resort, mile marker 82.1, US-1, Islamorada, FL.

  4. Scoring shall be the lowest total time over the entire six day course. Awards shall be by class, and one overall winner.

  5. Advertising will be unlimited on the sails; however, race sponsor decals may be applied to any area of the hulls of any registered boat.

  6. Registration will be available online at http://www.tybee500.com  after January 1, 2011. The entry fee is $600 per boat, and must be received by March 31st, 2011. After March 31st, the entry fee increases to $700. Fees include course tracking “Spot” rental use and boat setup, and a Rib Fest in Cocoa Beach. Checks or money orders should be made payable to: Tybee Island Sailing Association, Inc. Entry and waiver forms will be available on line, and must be accompanied by the entry fee. The entry form must be signed by the boat’s skipper and crew prior to the first race. All participants must agree to be bound by the current Racing Rules of Sailing and all other rules and instructions that govern the event. Mail entries to: Tybee 500, P.O. Box 1867, Tybee Island, GA, 31328. Cancellations received after March 15, 2010 will be refundable, minus a $100 administrative fee.

  7. Crews will be weighed and boats may be weighed prior to the start. Safety equipment will be inspected and certifications verified. Sails will be officially measured and marked by Race Officials. Factory hull numbers and rating certificates may be required. 

  8. Proof of liability insurance shall be required, and a copy must be submitted with registration. Sailing instructions will be available online shortly after advanced registration.

  9. The penalty for breaking a rule of Part 2 shall be one turn.

  10. THE COURSE:

    • Day 1, Monday, 16 May 2011,  Islamorada, FL - Hollywood, FL

    • Day 2, Tuesday, 17 May 2011, Hollywood, FL to Jensen Beach, FL  (This is a change from last year.  A revisit to a known Hotel will be used.)

    • Day 3, Wednesday, 18 May, 2011,   Jensen Beach, FL to Cocoa Beach, FL.  New Hotel Location is established; and a Rib Fest included in fee will be provided in Cocoa Beach.

    • Day 4, Thursday, 19 May, 2011,   Cocoa Beach, FL to Daytona Beach, FL

    • Day 5, Friday, 20 May, 2011,   Daytona Beach, FL to Fernandina Beach, FL

    • Day 6, Saturday, 21 May, 2011,  Fernandina Beach, FL to Tybee Island, GA
